2017 Tech Trends

These are the gadgets that will change your life this year.

January 2017

Calling all tech-heads and gadget gurus—2017 is the year for home products that combine fun and function. Watch for these Jetsons-esque smart products to pop up everywhere, from social media posts to brick-and-mortar storefronts to your neighbor’s kitchen. Get on trend and scoop up your favorites for yourself.

Digital assistants

The Jetsons had Rosie; we have Alexa. Like Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s digital assistant responds to your vocal commands: Alexa can play music, read books, set alarms and update your to-do list. She can also recommend a restaurant, call an Uber, report the traffic—and let you know if you should grab an umbrella before you go. Alexa is available in Amazon Echo and Echo Dot. A similar digital assistant is available through Google Home, or you can get on the waitlist for the more playful (and pricier) “social robot” Jibo.

Smart kitchens

Upgrade everyone’s favorite place to hang out in the house with new appliances or countertop gadgets. The Samsung Family Hub refrigerator has a high-resolution touch screen that replaces the chaos of sticky notes and soccer schedules held up with magnets. You can also display photos, stream music and browse recipes. And, perhaps cleverest of all, the fridge automatically takes photos of its interior that you can access from your phone—which will come in handy the next time you’re at the store and can’t remember if you need milk. Equally exciting is the Wi-Fi-enabled GE Profile Built-In Double Convection Wall Oven, with its smartphone app that allows you to control your oven wherever you go. Beyond big-ticket appliances, you can up your beverage game, too. Start the morning with the app-controlled Spinn Original coffee machine, and ease into your evenings with iSommelier’s smart decanter, which uses highly concentrated, purified oxygen for rapid aeration.

Portable Bluetooth printing

Yes, one of the hottest tech trends of 2017 is good-old-fashioned paper. A lost vestige of the digital age is the hard-copy photo to swap with friends, mount in frames or tuck into wallets. Enter the handheld printer. Polaroid Zip Instant Photoprinter is a lightweight, portable printer that wirelessly connects with your mobile phone. Connect, edit and print your favorite shots for 2x3 frameworthy prints in under a minute. For 4x6 prints, try the Canon Selphy CP910 Wireless printer.
